Packing tips from the Pros: Omri Taub

Omri is a 30-year old surfer, serial drone photographer and a traveler devoted to showcasing how the world is truly pretty from above. He used to work in real estate when a recent trip to Sri Lanka triggered a love affair with drone photography. His studio is currently in Tel Aviv, but you will often see him going back and forth Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. When Omri is not having a date with his DJI Phantom, you will find him riding the waves of the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.

As a surfer, he is a certified light packing expert. With the hopes of chasing summer all over the world all the time, Omri only brings stuff that is necessary for a surf trip. He’s only checking in surfboards, and the rest are in his carry-on!

He is a very social person and likes meeting people from all over the world, surfers or non-surfers alike. The sea has always been his home, and wherever he may be, one qualification of the cities he chooses to live in is a beach.

In this interview, Omri will give us the best tips and tricks on how to travel with a carry-on including a drone!

What's usually in your carry-on?

Board shorts, three shirts, my GoPro camera and my laptop. As a surfer, I really don’t need to pack much - I am always in the sea, so it doesn’t make sense to bring even shoes!  I always travel to places that offer laundry services, and if I run out of clothes, I will still be okay because I spend most of the days in the water. Board shorts will always work!

Tell us about the usual type of clothes you bring when traveling.

Traveling or not, I have the same clothes, so I don’t really think there’s a lot to choose from. Though I have to admit, I am very organised with my stuff. Traveling with a carry-on only is my way of life, so I make sure that everything I need fits in my bag. I usually pack the night before a flight. That’s enough time for me because I don’t even have to think about what to bring!

What's the best packing tip anyone has given you? Who gave it?

Packing cubes. When you open my travel carry-on, you will see a very organised view because I love organising! I’m obsessed with organisers and is constantly on the hunt for good ones. I think I only learned about the packing cubes from Cabin Zero - they are certainly the best! I want to have a hundred of them!

What’s the best thing about packing light?

Easy access. I open my carry-on, and everything I need is there. As a highly organized person, I really hate it when I have to look for things in a large space. Traveling with luggage gives me a lot of reason to bring unnecessary things that in the end, I won’t even use. It’s such a waste of time and effort! I always travel with a surfboard, so traveling with a carry-on makes me move faster in airports or hailing taxis. Imagine if I have to bring two surfboards and luggage? That would be a mess!

How does your packing for a travel routine look like?

Like I said, I pack the night before the flight. Enough time for me as I do have the same clothes when I’m traveling and when I’m back home.

How do you deal with "excess baggage" situations?

Never happened to me. Even with the surfboards, I didn’t experience this!

What's your best-kept packing secret?

Packing cubes! It’s efficient; it’s well organised and practical. I don’t really know a lot of people who use packing cubes, but if you’re one of the non-packing cubes users, you should get one now and see the magic for yourself!
