PACKING TIPS FROM THE PROS: MAURINA HAMID

Maurina Abdul Hamid is from a small island in Southeast Asia called Brunei. She is a creature of comfort and is an irreversibly chronic flashpacker - not currently looking for treatment options.

Suffers bouts of melancholia when not traveling; happiest when monging on a beach, exploring and finding her way around a foreign city, or just finding humour in a situation when being lost in translation.

Maurina loves animals, nature and life. She admits she longs for world peace and for people to just get along together. Her ultimate mission in life is to always spread happiness, positivity and beauty in any way she can, every single day.

What's usually in your carry-on?

Depends on where the destination is. However, I MUST ALWAYS carry on all my precious makeup and makeup brushes! Knowing how rough it can get in certain airports, and how luggage sometimes goes missing, they are never to be in the check-in luggage and must travel on my person!

Tell us about the usual type of clothes you bring when traveling?

I bring clothes that don’t make me look fat in photos, and that is all that matters. HAHA. Actually not that meticulous in day to day outfits though I am known to sometimes buy new things for certain days of the trip like a long flowy dress for a day at the beach, or a pair new safari pants for a hiking trail. I focus on comfort and looking good and if I don’t feel it, I just head on to the nearest Uniqlo! HAHA.

What's the best packing tip anyone has given you? Who gave it?

DON’T PACK SKIRTS. BECAUSE THIGHS CHAFE. (From my fats)

What is the best thing about packing light?

Mobility. Super easy to get on and off planes & trains, climb up and down stairs, and more room for shopping!

How does your packing for a travel routine look like?

While I have a general idea of what I want to pack days before the trip, the actual packing, however, really only starts the night before (and only after sufficient procrastination) and emotions range from panic to fear amidst bouts of realization that I don't have enough underwear for the trip and thus have to do laundry at 1 am.

How do you deal with "excess baggage" situations?

PRAY I DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT! Haha! It has actually never happened to me as I generally pack light, but it happened to friends during a trip a few times (too much shopping). Before going off to the airport we drop by a post office to mail some stuff off. Yes, we still need to pay extra but it’s incrementally cheaper than excess baggage fees - though they arrive slower.

What's your best-kept packing secret?

ZIPLOCK BAGS. They keep things organised, vacuum sealed and cheap!
