Katie Baxter is a Washington, D.C. local, but have spent many months and years traveling and living abroad. She started her travel blog in 2012 as a way to share her travels, recipes, thoughts, and ideas with the world.
Theoretically, she doesn’t like to self identify, but you will find hints of these pieces of her identity sprinkled around her blog, and in her writing: Katie is a vegan for health, spiritual practice, animals, and the environment. She travels for wisdom, to gain compassion and understanding, and to learn yoga, meditation, and the healing arts from humans around the world.
What's usually in your carry-on?
Everything! I try to travel carry-on only. But if not, clothes sufficient for a few days, toiletries, my laptop and some snacks. My checked bag was lost in India for 11 days, so it's nice to make sure I have what I need for a few days, just in case.
Tell us about the usual type of clothes you bring when traveling?
Since I travel about half of the year, my clothes are just practical, functional, layer-able, combine-able day wear. I try to make sure each piece has several uses, and I make sure I have enough layers for cooler days. Everything should ideally match and interchange, I keep it simple with basic colors, and maybe a scarf or some jewelry if I need to dress something up.
What's the best packing tip anyone has given you? Who gave it?
One pair of shoes, from a guy who traveled with 40 liters for almost two years. But, flip flops don't count ;) What is the best thing about packing light/heavy? I pack as light as possible, because I end up resenting my bags at a certain point of travel. I like to keep myself happy, so less is best for me.
How does your packing for a travel routine look like?
I start putting my things in a big pile up to a week before, and then look through it a few days before and take things out, and then again the day before.
How do you deal with "excess baggage" situations?
This happened to me on my first solo trip, when I was a terrible packer.. I moved about 12 kilos to this giant carry on “purse,” and had to lug that around.
What's your best-kept packing secret?
It depends on where you are going, but basically, if you forget it, or you end up needing something else, you can buy it at your destination. So everything in my maybe pile gets left out, and usually I don't end up wanting or needing those things anyway.
