Packing Tips from the Pros: Claudia Tavani

Born and raised in Cagliari, the capital of the gorgeous island of Sardinia (Italy), Claudia Tavani has been travelling the world since she was born and she made a career out of it. Her travelling career is divided into two parts: short-term trips (up to 25 days) and long periods of time (up to 10 years) living overseas until 2013, and then travelling more or less non-stop since November 2013.

She blogs about anything related to travel – either about specific destinations or general travel advice. But she also likes to rant a bit; hence the tagline of her blog “adventures and rants of an honest traveler.”

According to Claudia, she used to be an unsuccessful backpacker regarding packing – always carrying way too much stuff. Her ex-started calling her Turtle Tavani because he said she resembled a turtle with all her heavy backpacks. In the last couple of years, she learned how to pack more efficiently. In here, Claudia will share a few packing tips and the benefits of travelling light.

What's usually in your carry-on?

It depends. If I am travelling for prolonged period of times, I usually carry my MacBook, and thus my carry-on is taken up by all my electronics: computer, camera, phone, chargers, etc. If I am travelling for shorter periods of times, and I go carry-on only, it holds a bit of everything: clothes, toiletries…

Tell us about the usual type of clothes you bring when travelling? Do you pick your wardrobe meticulously, plan a day by day outfit, etc.?

I only bring comfortable clothes that are easy to wash and that, if they tear apart, I don’t mind losing. I try to plan some basic matching, but my state of mind is that I am not going to a fashion show!

What's the best packing tip anyone has given you? Who gave it?

I don’t remember who gave that to me, but someone suggested that the heavy stuff always goes at the bottom of the backpack, so that the weight sits on the hips and not on the shoulder. Good advice!

What is the best thing about packing light/heavy?

When I pack light and travel carry-on only, I don’t mind having short layovers and can run through the airport. This is really an issue when I want to make sure my bags get to my final destination. But having a lot of clothes means worrying less about laundry and… looking nicer in pictures!

How does your packing for a travel routine look like?

I used to start putting stuff aside for my travels weeks in advance, but since travelling has become a way of life, I know pack the day before I leave, hoping I don’t forget anything. And I can rely on my packing list.

How do you deal with "excess baggage" situations? Do you pay extra? Lessen your load?

I am a pro! I never have excess baggage, and in the unlikely event I do, I start wearing lots of layers.

What's your best-kept packing secret?

I travel with solid shampoo and conditioner: they weight much less, they take up much less space, and they last way longer.
