Packing tips from the pros: 5 Globetrotters Family Travel Blog

We are the 5 Globetrotters and we love to travel with our three young children. We have a strict rule of carry-on only, so we are really loving all the new CabinZero bags!

We are long time House Swappers, so almost all of our travel is done by swapping houses all over the world! We have really loved this way of travel; it’s stress free, it costs a fraction of what it normally should to travel, and you truly live like a local!

Being able to take our time while travelling and really integrate with each culture has transformed the way we move about. We love it!

What's usually in your carry-on?

We pack as light as possible, so aside from the mandatory clothes and TSA approved toiletries we have all my photography gear (which really adds up!). I always bring my Canon 5d, GoPro hero5, Mavic Pro and computer. And since we are always travelling with our three kids, we include snacks (very important!) colouring books and kids movies.

Tell us about the usual type of clothes you bring when traveling

We are super outdoorsy, so we pack a lot of lightweight hiking outfits and of course bathing suits for when we are lucky enough to wander upon a waterfall or a swimming hole. As much as my photographer’s brain would love to pack day by day outfits for my images, my three kids won’t allow for much “posing”.

What's the best packing tip anyone has given you? Who gave it?

The best advice I have gotten is just to keep is simple, which came from my Husband (who usually has to carry all our bags and children, haha!). But he is so right, travel should be about being in the moment. Pack only the necessities and forget about everything else.

What is the best thing about packing light?

Packing light has changed our life! Because we travel as budget friendly as possible, we have saved so much by only travelling carryon. We have never lost our bags and we are able to save so much time at the airport by skipping all the queues.

How does your packing for a travel routine look like?

I like to be as prepared as possible since we only have so much room. I will write out our bare minimums (pj’s, bathing suit, 4 shirts etc.) If I don’t write it all out, I always pack too much and curse myself later at the airport when I am struggling with kids and bags.

How do you deal with "excess baggage" situations?

Definitely lessen my load. Gone are the days when I could justify paying for one bag here and one bag there. What's your best-kept packing secret? I have been using portable vacuum bags for quite some time now and LOVE it! We save SO much room in our bags when you can minimize the size of it by a quarter. I have a portable vacuum sucker that takes seconds and we are on our way. Organization is key to a successful journey, especially with kids!
