Packing tips from the Pros: Inma and Jose of A World to Travel

After studying, volunteering and working their way around the world, Inma and Jose launched A World to Travel to share their experiences around the world, their passion for music festivals, the great outdoors and all things travel.

Born and raised in Galicia, Spain, this stunning land is still their base these days. Although never for long, as they take short and long trips every month as they have been doing since they were teenagers.

What's usually in your carry-on?

As little as possible! We are light packers and, unless it is strictly needed, we never check in luggage. Anyway, we rarely miss anything after having honed the art of packing up over the years.

Our photography equipment takes more than half the space of our suitcases, and the rest are usually functional clothes valid for any season and destination. Here's our trusty and minimalist packing list for long-term travel. Check it out!

Tell us about the usual type of clothes you bring when travelling? Do you pick your wardrobe meticulously, plan a day by day outfit, etc.?

Since our plans may change last minute, we need to have both warm and light clothes with us pretty much all the time. For instance, two years back Inma travelled for a few months and went from -18ºC in Finland to +45ºC in Dubai.

Therefore, layers are key. Apart from that, we usually take something warm in case it gets really cold, something waterproof, something stylish enough to go on a date and something comfy for the great outdoors.

What's the best packing tip anyone has given you? Who gave it?

Time spent on the road taught us the less you have with you, the better.

What’s the best thing about packing light/heavy?

We could not be happier packing light. That way we can save time, money and possible losses or thefts.

How does your packing for a travel routine look like?

Jose packs the night before leaving. Inma, literally minutes before heading to the airport. Sometimes it is somewhat stressing, but she can't help it.

How do you deal with "excess baggage" situations? Do you pay extra? Lessen your load?

Luckily, we were asked to reduce the weight on our bags just a couple of times. And so we entered the plane dressed as if we were off to Antarctica.

Backpacks come in handy as low-cost airlines, the ones giving you the most trouble, usually, overlook those and focus only on wheeled carry-ons. Yay!

What's your best-kept packing secret?

We never thought we would say this, but after more than 15 years packing almost every month, we can finally say loud and clear that we fall into the underpacker category. It is not a secret anymore but something we are really proud of :D
